The Jefferson Bear's 3rd Grade GCT and Enrichment Reading Group

Jefferson Way Lemonade
"Making Your Lemonade Dreams Come True"

Congratulations to the 3rd Grade GCT and Enrichment Reading Group who not only made fresh squeezed lemonade, but sold it to their classmates today for $.50.  They were able to make a 'net profit' which they are going to donate to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer.

To prepare for the event we read Jacqueline Davis' book, "Lemonade War."  We have looked at short videos, read other books, and investigated economic concepts, like developing a business plan and their very own commercial.  Students not only had a great time learning, but also applying learned concepts to their everyday life.

Noetic Learning Math Contest

CONGRATULATIONS!

To all 47 4th and 5th grade students who came to the library yesterday to participate in the Math Contest.  It was a very challenging contest.  Students had to read and understand 20 different math problems and then proceed to answer them based on what question was asked in the problem.  For quite a few problems there were multiple steps that had to be figured out in order to be successful in solving.  Students only had 45 minutes which for some was perfect, for other it was too long and still for others it was not long enough.

This contest was great practice for upcoming end of the year math testing.  Students practiced endurance and perseverance.

No matter the outcome ALL students were winners for trying their best!  Congratulations!!!

Students can find out how they did in their specific contest by stopping by and talking to Mrs. Geibl.  Results will be posted online at the Noetic Learning Math Contest website on April 27, 2015.

Noetic Math Contest

April 15th - 11:00

Students will be given 45 minutes to solve 20 math problems that are designed to enrich and strengthen student problem solving skills. Students who succeed in problem solving will be awarded medals and be listed on the Math Contest web site.

Please visit the Noetic Learning Math Contest by clicking on this link.  It will give you more of an idea of what the contest is like.  You can also look up student scores from past contests to get an idea of how easy or difficult this contest may be for your student.  If you scroll down to WI you will also find students from Jefferson who participated in the fall.

Practice problems and permission slips will be sent home with students who have signed up to participate before Spring Break.

Please contact Mrs. Geibl through email by clicking on my name, or call me at 414-604-4100 ext. 1320.

Battle of the Books comes to Jefferson!

Let the Battles Begin!

Over Spring Break students will have the opportunity to read the following books:
Freckle Juice - by Judy Blume
Magic Tree House - Midnight on the Moon by Mary Pope Osborne
Hatchet - by Gary Paulson
Because of Winn Dixie - Kate Di Camillo
Bud, Not Buddy - Christopher Paul Curtis
Number the Stars - Lois Lowry

Students are asked to read and become experts on 2-3 of these books because they will participate in a book battle on a team of 6-7 peers with another group of students to see who knows the most about these books.

The 2 winning teams from Jefferson will go on to compete at Horace Mann Elementary to see which school is the most knowledgeable!

Have a GREAT Spring Break and don' t forget to READ!

Tom Watson lives in Chicago with his wife, daughter and son. He also has a dog, as you could probably guess. The dog is a LabradorNewfoundland mix. Tom says he looks like a Labrador with a bad perm. He wanted to name the dog 'Put Your Shirt On' (please don't ask why), but he was out-voted by his family. The dog's name is Shadow. Early in his career Tom worked in politics, including a stint as the Chief Speechwriter for the Governor of Ohio. This experience helped him develop the unique, storytelling narrative style of the Stick Dog books. More important, Tom's time in politics made him realize a very important thing: Kids are way smarter than adults. And it's a lot more fun and rewarding to write stories for them than to write speeches for grown-ups.

Quiz Bowl 2014-2015

On Friday, March 6th we went to practice for the quiz bowl at Mitchell Elementary.  It was a great experience for all of us!  We had a blast. Thanks for hosting Mitchell!
On Saturday, March 7th we went to the District's Administration Building for the official 2014-2015 QUIZ BOWL.  We were on fire!  We were quick with the buzzers and quick in our thinking.  We were in the lead!  Unfortunately, the buzzer system broke down and we were not able to finish the game.

RESCHEDULING - The Quiz Bowl Semi-finals and Finals will be held on Thursday, March 19th at the District's Administration building at 5:30 pm.  It is the hope that new buzzers will be purchased very soon so that we can once again reconvene before Thursday evening to be able to attend the Semi-finals and Finals.

WHAT THAT MEANS FOR US - In fairness we are not getting together again to practice for quiz bowl, however, when a new date is set we will once again meet to go over some important information.  Please be patient. Keep studying!

The goal of the competition is to encourage students' interest in math, develop problem solving skills, and inspire them to excel in math.   Many of these problems were very challenging and students had to really pay attention to what was being asked of them.  It was not a multiple choice contest.

I am pleased to announce that  Ava Bertling made the Noetic Math Honor Roll. She also was the 4th grade team winner.  Way to go Ava!

I am also please do announce that Tammy Xiong was the 5th grade team winner for this fall math contest.  Tammy was honorably mentioned for her performance and math skill as well.  Congratulations!
